Commemorating one year of Cornerstone

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the launch of all Cornerstone administrative systems. This has been a period of significant change. We experienced unforeseen setbacks that delayed stabilizing many of our systems, but we are continuing to make improvements to provide enhanced solutions to better meet your needs and improve the overall user experience within the Cornerstone system.

In the past year, we also listened. We heard your feedback and frustration about the challenges you face every day. We also heard your suggestions on how we can make it easier for you to do your job. Your insights have been invaluable and will drive ongoing improvements as we move forward with this implementation. We will continue to solicit feedback to make sure we establish a system that serves the needs of our community.

I would like to thank every staff and faculty member who has worked in the systems, partnered with the project team, and dealt with the challenges of this transition. Your patience, commitment and support in this endeavor have been tremendous and are very much appreciated by the Cornerstone project team and leadership.

Below are some key areas that have action plans in progress to address areas of opportunity:

  • Financial Reporting – The University Controller’s Office has shared guidance on financial reporting tools to help you manage your accounts. The team also is preparing recommendations on reports to use by role. As part of this process we are also doing a full review and analysis of all current and proposed reports in an effort to reduce the number of reports and queries to those that are most effective for staff and faculty to manage accounts.
  • Cornerstone Website – We are currently working on refreshing the website to make it easier for you to find online information and resources.
  • Customer Service – We are taking measures to improve response and resolution times for the help desks.
  • Managing Change – We will create better forums where you can provide feedback and participate in activities that will improve our systems and processes. We are committed to delivering more consistent, targeted and timely updates.
  • Faculty Education – Grant and Contract Accounting is making progress with its goal to expand education among research administrators on how to use the queries and reporting tools to manage grant accounts and to work with Oracle to establish screens in the system that will provide easy updates for faculty.
  • Staff Training – A cross-functional task force has been established to develop a broader curriculum with more relevant courses to help you navigate the systems and understand the supporting processes.
  • Business Processes – University Human Resources and Payroll Services are currently engaged in a formal Business Process Redesign (BPR) effort to enhance service delivery, operate with greater efficiency and advance best-in-class practices. University Procurement Services recently launched “how to” guides that provide a roadmap of the end-to-end procure-to-pay process, and step-by-step instructions for specific processes.

We will share more on our plans and progress against the goals we’ve set to improve the ways we work together in the coming weeks and months.
